XenoWorld Updates Log
(Original log for my old homepages)

These are the older log entries that were originally in the log at XenoWorld II. Who knows, someone might be interested in them! Note that some of the links here may be broken because they no longer exist.
Back to XenoXone Updates Log

29 November 1998 I have been quietly hacking away at the page for the last few weeks. Being busy with univ, exams and all that, I haven't really been formal about it, that's why there's a big gap in the log, even though truckloads of work has been going on. The guestbook is now complete (way!). I also created a button for GameAxis (you can see it to the left) and added a buttons frame (what do you think of it?). Also, I rearranged the scripting within the main frame so that the 'frame fixer' starts working more quickly. (To do this site-wide, I actually wrote a script to automatically update all the pages at once, and ran it on the GameAxis server!) I am now considering how to make the site 'AnyBrowser version 0.0' compliant (you'll see an 'AnyBrowser' button to the left even though I am not really that compliant yet). There's also a logger (part of the statistics engine) which sneakily records where people are coming from to my site, as well as their browser and IP. You may also notice the 'Dir List Stopper' added to all directories which don't have an 'index.html' file. Phew!

4 November 1998 The new XenoWorld II is up! I finally uploaded everything to GameAxis (they're way cool!).

3 November 1998 I completed moving all the content into the new site system. I updated a few things (banners, logs, etc.) and I'm all set to upload to GameAxis.

2 November 1998 This is getting exciting! I rearranged the directory structure of the site and added a few tricks here and there including a 'frame fixer' (makes sure no document from XenoWorld is loaded unless the full frameset accompanies it). In general I cleaned up the place.

1 November 1998 After experimenting with GameAxis and what I can/cannot do on their server (Microsoft IIS sucks!), it's finally time to revamp my site now that I've got CGI. For a start, I got the Fly GIF generator to work with Windows NT (another Lowdown possibility) and built the XenoWorld Statistics engine (counter and access log) based on the counter from Matt's Script Archive.

8th October 1998 I've found it! GameAxis allow proper CGI and they're very clean. I love this!

19th September 1998 Phew! After a lot of hard work, I finally recovered the data off my hard-disk (maybe this deserves an entry in The Lowdown). All the artwork for The Rant is intact, but the page itself needs to get redone.

23rd July 1998 My hard-disk got corrupted. I lost all the work I'd done on The Rant because I hadn't uploaded it yet.

18th July 1998 I started building The Rant. All the artwork is finished and the page is sort of taking shape.

15th July 1998 Inspired by a problem I faced, I added The Lowdown to Zone Electronica and put in the first entry about connecting large disks to PCs. In doing so I also found the need to add The Dictionary and which naturally led to Tech-Speak which I also added.

10th July 1998 Retouched my Personal Profile page. I also further refined this log page to make the code less messy (I removed the 'padding.gif' image and replaced it with HTML code to indent the text).

8th July 1998 Created the HTML version of the Online Resume. The Resume section was polished up in general and is now complete (for the time being). I also tweaked this log file so that it no longer uses tables. This way the entries near the top (the most recent) can be read without having to wait for all the updates to load. This will be important as the log gets bigger.

7th July 1998 Added the Room of Poesy to the Studio. Again, this is just a copy of what I had in XenoWorld Classic with a few tweaks here and there. It still includes just two poems, the same two from Classic (I'm keeping the "Teamwork" witticism for a separate section). No submission form yet, we need to wait for CGI for that.

5th July 1998 Set up the main page for the Arts zone (Studio Xeno). The background image is not actually by me, but is a reduced contrast version of one available on the Web.

4th July 1998 Completed the main page for the Academy. Also fixed a little bug with the code in the tabs.

28th June 1998 Started doing the artwork for the Academy main page. The column was cut out from a ray-traced image I had from somewhere.

20th June 1998 Finally, XenoWorld II is online! I decided to place it at XOOM since they have the neatest way for supporting subdirectories (I am still looking for somewhere with CGI though). I also registered at V3 and changed the address at NetForward (it was still pointing at XenoWorld Classic which, incidentally, I have decided to keep at GeoCities for nostalgia). I put up a couple of banners here and there for XOOM and V3 (the obligatory stuff) and retouched the main entry page.

15th June 1998 Started building my online resume section. I created the page for choosing the format (either Word or HTML) and I copied in the Word format version. The HTML version is yet to be done.

12th June 1998 Wow! It's been a long time since I last did anything here. Now the exams are over, I can get back to work. I set up the main page for Zone Electronica. I also polished up a few things here and there.

8th April 1998 Added my personal profile page, basically just a copy of the one in XenoWorld Classic with minor modifications. I like the design of this one, I don't think I'm going to change it. I just want to add new stuff to it; lots of new stuff that is. I also did some cosmetic changes, I added the nice background in the side bar, and changed the background on the main page.

2nd April 1998 Added a page of objectives in an attempt to formalize the site building process. The first bits of the main home page were also added.

30th March 1998 Finalized the design for the infrastructure of XenoWorld II. This log was added as the first piece of actual content (that's why all the updates before this one do not have exact dates). The system now works okay except the site is still completely empty! It is also still on my machine at home. Still looking for a good free home page host, preferably with CGI, SSI and subdirectories.

Around January 1998 XenoWorld II was born! Once I got some free time, I started using my past experience to work on the ultimate site. I started making lists of comments, lists of ideas and lists of subjects. I took in everything I knew, all the mistakes, all the ideas and made a fresh start. I worked on the pages on my local machine at home, while simultaneously looking for the perfect place for them to live on the Net.

Around December 1997 I started to have second thoughts about my handle. Maybe XenoPhantom was a bit too unique(!). I digged the idea of Micro, but there was the problem of uniqueness. So I started working around it. I decided to stick with the Xeno- theme. I would still maintain that I am a XenoPhantom (read more about this in the XW FAQ if you want), but I would put the word Micro in somewhere.. Watch out world, here comes MicroX! What next? A new home page of course!

Around July 1997 With the exams done, I moved to a new location at GeoCities and started working on XenoWorld (classic). I was at the time doing an internship at the UNESCO Cairo Office, so I was learning lots of new stuff like JavaScript and Perl that I could use in my site. XenoWorld Classic was another success story. Everyone I knew loved it and commended me on it. I maintained XenoWorld until some time around October when I got really busy with my studies. XenoWorld became outdated.

Around February 1997 I realized that Vega was a very common name. I wanted a more unique name as my involvement with the Internet evolved. I thought of the name Micro, depicting power in small size, but figured it would also be repeated too much. A shame really, I liked the idea. So I thought of the really bizarre name, XenoPhantom. With the new name, I also decided to create a brand spanking new presence for myself on the Internet, and along came the idea of XenoWorld!

Around November 1995 I created my first home page at GeoCities. It was called Dimension Vega and was very primitive because I had very little knowledge about HTML and none about JavaScript, CGI, etc. However, it was quite stylish as a lot of my friends agreed at the time. The name Vega was what I called myself at the time. It was given to me by some friends when as I was very young because I was like the evil kid in the bunch, so they compared me to the baddie in a cartoon series. Later, when I first got on the Internet, I decided I liked the name and went on and used it. Dimension Vega was maintained regularly for about a year until I lost interest in it because my HTML knowledge was outgrowing it.
