Freelance programming for the Population Council, Cairo, January/February 2000.
Designed and implemented in Visual Basic an improved version of the library catalog program I had written before. This version provides better functionality and more ease of use than both my older Perl based program and the original DOS based program as well as better protection for data integrity.
Full-time intern, Population Council, Cairo, Summer 1999.
Helped the computer consultant there in maintaining the LAN connecting computers in several offices on several floors, keeping the computers and software in working order and teaching inexperienced users to perform tasks on the computer.
Was exposed to the internal telephone system during the installation of an upgraded system and helped in connecting it to modems in the computers.
Reverse engineered an old library catalog program (DOS based) and wrote a program to convert its undocumented database format so the catalog could be printed sorted in several ways. Went on to write a CGI client/server type database program in Perl to replace the out-dated DOS based program.
Participated in designing parts of the web site for the UCO including a local search engine and a message board system.
For a period of two weeks, while my supervisor was away, had the sole responsibility for maintaining the web site and worked directly with personnel from different departments to update their corresponding departments on it.
Developer for the Open Amiga Foundation since its inception in 1999; an initiative to develop an open source version of the Amiga Operating System for use on a wider range of platforms.
Executive member in the Scientific Society for Computers at Cairo University since 1995; arranging trips, special lectures and publishing a computer magazine.
